Legal Jobs in The South West

This region is undeniably popular. From Gloucestershire down to Bristol and on through Devon to Land’s End, Cornwall, it is not hard to see why the South West is popular. The hub is the vibrant city of Bristol which houses many top quality firms such as Burges Salmon and Osborne Clarke. Well known for great quality work alongside quality of life, Bristol is a very attractive option. With excellent schools and Universities across the region plus wonderful culture and diverse sporting opportunities, many people seek to return to the South West area.

Across this location certainly the broad range of national and strong regional firms ensure that often lawyers remain in the region or City-trained lawyers look to return to the area. Salaries on offer are on a par with other regions and the top firms compete favourably and attract national and international work.

Aside from Bristol the South West opens up to many wonderful counties such as Devon, referred to by some as ‘England’s favourite playground’. The South West has strong agriculture and tourism industries but has also seen major regeneration projects, including the Eden Project, and has a thriving business community.

This diverse county of Devon with outstanding National Parks and an inspiring coastline has the two major cities of Exeter and the historic port city of Plymouth. Leading firms in Devon include Foot Anstey, Michelmores, Ashfords and Bond Dickinson. Being only a relatively short distance from Bristol there is good competition for work and for staff.

Other commercial centres are the spa towns of Bath and Cheltenham where you discover national firm Charles Russell, niche firm Wiggin and regional firm Thrings. The rich and diverse heritage of the counties of Wiltshire and Somerset are home to the great national icon, Stonehenge, and also make up part of the tapestry of the West Country life. Leading firms in these areas include Battens, Wilsons and national firm ClarkeWillmott.

Outside of these centres when you look across a number of major towns there are excellent long established leading commercial and also high street firms. Further down the coast in Cornwall, where quality of life attracts many ex City lawyers, a number of niche commercial firms continue to attract City work and City clients at competitive rates. So, although you will not be paid City rates you can still enjoy a challenging mix of work
