Legal News for 2016

So the date has been set for the EU Referendum and many large businesses have today come out in favour of staying in and no doubt this will be the start of many debates. We will also see much discussion about how 'Brexit' will affect lawyers and law firms, both from the point of changes to legislation and also how law firms will develop going forward. Then there is further talk about the rise of the Accountants and maybe this year they may forge ahead with fully integrated multi-disciplinary practice. Certainly, there have been some big names moving across to head up specialist areas as they aim their vast resources at developing their legal services and make statements about intending to be a top 20 global legal services provider.

But for now we can report on the changes we have seen locally over the last 12 months. There have been a number of high profile mergers notably Shakespeares and SGH Martineau to form Shakespeare Martineau and also more recently Wragge Lawrence Graham and Gowlings to form Gowling WLG, which sees the local name Wragge finally gone it would seem.

Other firms to merge and expand include Trowers and Hamlins who expanded by merging with Stones Solicitors in Devon. Recently, Knight Professional Services have merged with Darbys Solicitors and Knights have further ambitious plans this year so watch this space.
